The first time I met Jake Bellows must have been Christmas time ‘round 2006. It had to be, because “The Hate Yourself Change” was released in 2005, and I remember already being a fan when our mutual friend Sarah Xiong introduced us. Jake and I were both at Saddle Creek Bar (RIP) supporting Sarah (Hot Sick!) at an open mic. In classic Sarah fashion, she performed a few lines of a beautiful original song, forgot the lyrics (or otherwise got nervous), stopped and handed her guitar to Jake to fill her time – which he did, to cheers.

I cannot remember who was on the bill the following night at O’Leaver’s, but Jake definitely was not. Regardless, Stephen Bartolomei (Mal Madrigal) eventually handed his guitar to Jake (man of the people), who came out of the crowd and shut down a roomful of chatter.

A few years later, I learned to record and mix audio, started buying cameras, and created Love Drunk. In 2016, Nicholas O’Bradovich and I filmed Jake performing Help in a 1999 AWD Chevy Astro van parked outside Todd and Orenda Fink’s (The Faint/Azure Ray/Closeness) house.

It took another seven years of texting Jake “Are you coming home for Christmas?” for the stars to align again, and they did in what truly feels like a gift – Love Drunk’s 150th session.

The Final Love Drunk Session

I’m struggling to communicate exactly how I feel about this decision. I mean, yeah, Love Drunk was a lot of work. We rode pretty hard in those early days – 48 sessions in 2011 and 40 in 2012. We also did a pair of 16-day east coast tours, filming bands in their own cities between Omaha and upstate New York and back. Operating a project like this for free over the last 14 years wound up being pretty expensive (who knew!). And the time it took to produce all these videos also resulted in a lot of missed moments in my personal life. But this labor of love lead me to find my spark. Or as those Irish kids said, “shpahrk.” I wasn’t prepared for the friendships I’d develop and the things I’d learn through this project. For the way it shaped me, I’m truly grateful.

And while reminiscing is bad ass, and I’m gonna continue to do it, I’ve learned that the future is markedly more bad ass! So I’ve decided to point my energy in the direction of helping younger, more talented people find their place in photography, video and, hopefully, live music video sessions.

Okay. Now for some thank you’s.

Thank you to the hundreds of musicians who trusted us to be part of your art. Thank you to the 100+ rooftops, back yards and thrift stores across the eastern half of the country for hosting us. Thank you to my parents, Deborah Greenblatt and David Seay, for completely supporting me in every passion I’ve ever had. And last but not least, thank you to the 80+ people who have volunteered to operate a camera or mix audio, whether you did it 20 times or just once! I’m sure I missed some of you [see below], but I’ll never completely forget any of this.
